This is Emily. She is 33 and likes feminism, dogs and writing. She also likes travelling and after uni, Em lived and explored solo off the well-trodden path (Chile, Peru, Costa Rica and other places your grandma doesn’t want to hear you went to). She worked in between all this and despite becoming a successful sub-editor at 27 (think newspapers and magazines) she wasn’t overly phased about what direction she was going. Then one day changed it all; she was cruising in Brunswick on her bike when she was run over. The realisation of “I’m going to be hit by this car” was the last – and clearest – thing she recalls. That, and the horrible groaning noise her body was making when she came back to consciousness with a broken neck, and broken face that was crushed into the asphalt. Experiencing the full awareness of her own mortality changed her life, and while her body sometimes still gets freaked out by fast objects and the sound of car tyres, she decided she wanted to spend her life doing something she was passionate about. Emily had always wanted to start her own mag about things she liked, but dogs were taken by Instagram and the interweb had feminism covered. So she got drunk. And realised three pints deep that this was her passion. Craft beer. A light shone down from above and Froth Magazine was born. Em successfully runs Froth with the help of her ace designer, contributors and of course the brewers of Australia. Beer to blow her mind this year? Fixation IPA (very hoppy India pale ale). Weirdest flavour? Moon Dog Brewery’s squid ink and wasabi beer which ”was fuckin disgusting but I admired their adventurousness”. Best pub? The Catfish on a Monday night: they somehow pack a blues band into a 2m space and it’s crammed full of hospos, musos, artists and fellow alcos. If you see her there, approach slowly with a beer and she might show you her scar.
