this weekend in melbourne
See it
IT HAS A GOLDEN YELLOW SUN, AND AN ELDERLY GREY MOON @ ACCA (21 May to 24 July) – I would like to lock in ‘The Universe’ for five hundred please.
St Kilda Film Festival @ Arts Centre (19 – 28 May) – a festival of people who would rightly vote Margaret and David for PM
The Sound of Music @ Regent Theatre (12 May – 26 Jun) – Red White and the seven dwarfs kick it around their forest mansion with Captain Von Babetown, being mega chill up trees, until the evil Nazi Queen tries to nab them after their greatest stage-performance. They trick Queenies henchmen then kick it to the hills and I still cannot believe this is a true story.
Eat it
Eat Street Melbourne @ Sofitel Melbourne (24 May only) – an event that sees the city literally eat itself.
Fiesta Malaysia @ Federation Square (21 May only) – Dear Fiesta, I thought you were Mexican, lah? trololol
Drink it
Cool Climate Wine Show @ Mornington Racecourse (23-31 May) – a show starring a collection of polo shirts standing around their BMWs, complaining about global cooling.
Bill Henson: Landscapes @ Castlemaine Art Gallery (30 April – 30 June) – offending landscapes this time. Onya Bill.
Good Beer Week (until 22 May) – beer this week sounds good.
Books and Ideas at Monalto @ Montalto (monthly until Nov) – why go postal when you can go coastal.
Get out there
Australian Indigenous Surf Titles @ Bells Beach (20 – 22 May) – Bells Beach is used once again for its waves, and once again the bells are left out. WON’T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE BELLS?
Run The Gap @ Halls Gap (22 May) – the more you run, the more you gap. Whiskey tango foxtrot am I even talking about.
Cool stuff
Pentridge Prison Ghost Tour @ Pentridge Prison (19-22 May) – visit the spirits of our baddest and maddest.
The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition 1950s pop-up bar @ Ripponlea (20 May) – experience the movie and dress up in 50’s clothes, twirl around the ballroom, land the town hottie and then burn the place to the ground. Classic Friday night.
eat & drink by the sprink
Kong @ 599 Church Street, Richmond – Kong is the cooler, funnier and better-at-karaoke little sister to the dining institution Chin Chin. With lighboxes and instillations adorning the interior and artwork projected on the walls outside, it is a fun, fast and colorful dining experience in all aspects. This restaurant is where I would have my final meal, no question – there is so much flavour in every dish that it is hard to know quite what to do so you simply nod and request a bigger shovel. It is almost impossible to choose the best dishes but I shall for I am an urban Xena.. go the wood grilled edamame, the soft shell crab bun with salted duck egg (WHAT), the caramelised miso eggplant and the BBQ tray (ask for extra cos, just cos). Oww that was like choosing which of my 17 cats I like the best I LOVE YOU ALL KITTIES. Side note that everyone who eats here is at least 8.8/10 hawtness, so if you are coming here on a date then hats off to your self-esteem and WELCOME FRIEND here take my digits.
Oh and the Kong experience isn’t complete without a trip to the toilet – you will come back fluent in Korean. Anyong haseyo Ben Cooper, you complete me.
next weekend in melbourne
Melbourne International Jazz Festival @ multiple venues (3-12 June) – get those paws did people, it is Jazz Hands week.
Double Indemnity @ MTC (30 May – 2 July) – How fast was I going, Officer? Oh I’d say around ninety. Spose you get down off your motorcycle and give me a ticket. Spose I’ll let you off with a warning this time. Spose they wrote ’em like this still, wouldn’t that be neat.
Scorsese @ ACMI (26 May – 18 Sep) – the hero behind the anti-heroes of film.
Taste of Sorrento @ Sorrento (28 May – 8 June 2016) – fresh, salty with a hint of Kweena Arena. It is oh so tender.
Festival of Steve @ Taxi Riverside (May 28 only) – celebrating the most dapper of the chaps.
